Movie Review: Hubad

15 07 2008

Last Sunday… In the hopes breaking into the habit of just lying around the house… I went to the CCP and watched some of the Cinemalaya films… I watched Ataul for Rent, Ang Lalaki sa Parola and this film Hubad. At first I thought the film is about sex again and those stuff but I was wrong. Hubad stars Irma Adlawan, Nonie Buencamino, Peque Gallaga, Dennis Marasigan, Sharmaine Buencamino and Mailes Kanapi.

The film is about the predicaments of creating a very controvertial play called “HUBAD”. From the actors’ illicit affairs to director’s issues with sensorship and financial help, the film explores these unspoken problems of the society and how we always hide and pretend in such situations facing us. I don’t want to say any details of these since I strongly encourage people to watch the film. (If ever this will be played again).

The film for me is a real eye opener of why we always pretend that something is fine well in fact we are in a deep trance of disillusion of contentment. Some pretend that their relationships are fine but why do they always seek others affection. Some refuse to give in to standards of society but they are the once who also violate the set standards and principles they promise to live by. Yet we all shamelessly walk among other people as if we don’t have a smudge of dirt in our vain. People often criticize on another maybe because we don’t want that our own lives to be on the spotlight. We hurt people because always care more about ourselves. It is such a shame we always puts masks… to hide what we really look like.

For the technical aspect of the film… I think is well done a superb casting. Actors are really good especially Irma Adlawan… There is a strong scene where she finally confronts Peque about his comments why Irma is sexually repressed. The scene is so powerful I think she is directly seeing those lines to me… The only bad comment I would say is that the film made to look like shooting a reality show sometimes but there are shoot that were also tastefully done…

I congratulate the makers of the film for bring us Hubad. Hope it will be supported by many moviegoers and show the world superb film making to the rest of the world.

I give Hubad 5 out of 5 Jupiter star power.
