According to Billboard Magazine, David Archuleta’s new single, “Crush” (19/Jive), debuts at No. 2, thus becoming the highest new entry of 2008 and the highest debut ever for an “American Idol” song not performed on the series.
“Crush,” which debuts at No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs, is the fourth entry for Archuleta on the Hot 100. His first three all debuted the week of June 7 and spent one week each on the tally: His version of John Lennon’s “Imagine” at No. 36, Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” at No. 58 and “In This Moment” at No. 60. “Crush” is the seventh single to debut inside the top 10 of the Hot 100 in 2008.

I was just browsing in the web and look at the American idol updates and a big news is declared… there is a 4th judge in the coming season of American Idol… she is Grammy-Nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi. As posted by Miles in the americanidol.com site of her achievements:

Add up with the crazy trio Paula, Randy and Simon… you can expect a much tougher AI8 auditions… Is Paula feeling threaten of the added girl power into the table? Will there be a girl to girl fighting now… just kidding… I love AI and I hope more artists are discovered and given a chance.

David has delivered an amazing first single to his fans, and the public. It is rhythmic, David’s superior vocals soar and are identifiable throughout, has a catchy beat.. Hey-> I watched lotsa American Bandstand back in the day
His fans like me find themselves humming along unconsciously, and the verses transport the listener back to those bygone days of school girl and schoolboy CRUSHES… It has an appeal across a very broad spectrum of listeners, and should effectively silence the detractors and critics who didn’t believe he had mainstream appeal. CRUSH is the catapult for David to continue his growth and evolution as an artist – I ANTICIPATE MANY MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING MUSIC FROM HIM. TAKE A BOW DAVID… YOU’VE ARRIVED.

Think it’s fair to say that David Archuleta is now the “benchmark” by which future AI male leaning “pop” singers will be compared. I think it’s also safe to say that he will be the first male contestant certified as a bona fide pop star from the show. Any way you cut it, this is a remarkable achievement, and he is deserving of all the recognition coming his way.
